This is a town worth exploring, but while wandering around by themselves would be enjoyable, they’ll miss many hidden gems – like I did the first time I went there. Learn about the latest ships and destinations by browsing hundreds of questions (and the answers to those questions) posted by real cruisers. If you happen not to find what you’re looking for, you can even post a question of your own. Experience Alaska’s premier attractions glaciers and wildlife, from two very different vantage points, by land and by sea.... Whether you cruise multiple times per year or you're new to cruising, the goal of Royal Caribbean Blog is for it to be a useful resource for keeping up to date with what's new and exciting with Royal Caribbean. As evening approached, however, Reeham and I began to feel better and were able to enjoy our last night onboard before disembarking the next morning in Seward.

Save Big With These Alaska Cruise Deals
One of the most important things to consider when booking a solo trip is avoiding the surcharge for a solo cabin—most cruise lines price cabins as double occupancy. Whether you're interested in hiking through a forest, trekking to glaciers or a shopping spree downtown, the towns along Alaska's inside passage provide a variety of adventurous activities. Alaska cruise ports such as Juneau and Ketchikan are small cities with their own personalities. Anchorage is the state's largest city and a gateway to the rest of the state.

If living large is your goal, you're not going to find anything better than this — other than with a cruise on a similar Norwegian vessel that also cruises to Alaska from Seattle. Norwegian Bliss, also based in Washington during the summer, is part of the same Norwegian Breakaway-Plus class of vessels and has a similar Haven enclave. The pool area, a true stunner, comes with comfortable padded loungers, a pool and whirlpools. Its retractable glass roof is perfect for cruises to Alaska when the weather is iffy. There were very few Carnival sailings available for under $750 per person, with most Carnival sailings starting around $800 per person or more for seven nights. The other stop worth exploring is the Southeast Alaska Discovery Centre, which is $5 for adults, but free for kids.

They come in a wide range of prices, and the lowest fare we uncovered was $73 per person per night. However, any balcony stateroom below $150 per night on a mainstream line is a good deal on an Alaska cruise fare. So, it’s not walkable really, but there are two low-cost ways to get there. One is the Blue Line Bus from town to the Gary Paxton Industrial Park, which takes about 45 minutes and a four-minute walk to the entrance, or they can go on a shuttle bus run by a local company called Sitka Tours. Downtown Juneau is scenic, with a picturesque waterfront and magnificent peaks surrounding the city. Right in front of where cruise ships dock downtown is a boardwalk perfect for taking a stroll and admiring the views.
Cruise fare, flights, and hotel
One of the first things I noticed was the large Centrum in the middle of Radiance of the Seas. Royal Caribbean is known for their sprawling Royal Promenades inside the ship, but the cruise line’s older cruise ships do not have this feature. Plus, I assumed the cruise was offered at such a low price not because the product would not be up to par, but because of low demand at the end of the summer season. Many of the most popular travel cards on the market come with benefits specifically geared toward cruise enthusiasts, others include general travel perks that make them a good option for booking cruises. Norwegian Cruise Line pioneered the idea of a special area for solo travelers on its ships with pricing designed for one.

They offered what I think are the best views from the ship, and there were always fewer people there than in other bars and lounges. The bathroom in our cabin was a standard cruise ship-sized bathroom and nothing too fancy. The bathroom is where I noticed the ship showing its age, as the light would flicker on and off several times before staying on and the paint was faded in some areas, but that didn’t matter in the long run. Because I travel with so much camera gear along with my clothes, I’m always happy when a cruise ship cabin has tons of storage. I prefer hanging out on the pool deck or a lounge with more panoramic views of the outside.

Many cruisers tack on a land portion option, allowing travelers to head into Denali National Park or stay in local land resorts to learn more about the culture. Whether hiking a glacier, kayaking through the water, dog sledding, panning for gold or taking a panoramic helicopter ride, there is plenty to do. There's nothing like an amazing adventure during an Alaskan vacation, and if you're looking for things to do then dog sledding is a bucket-list experience.

The Best Way to Experience Alaska is with Norwegian
These sailings start in one city but end in another and can lead to better deals, even during summer. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site. When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. Royal Caribbean fans have plenty of options for the season with four different ships sailing to Alaska. However, prices can soar, with some trips on the newest ships and at peak season starting around $900 per person.
ALASKA CRUISES
Norwegian Bliss is one of their ships with these studio cabins meant for one person and a lounge where they can mingle with other single travelers. Ever wanted to go on an Alaska glacier tour to experience hiking in its open nature? As you plan your Alaska vacation, you might be torn between traveling by cruise ship, plane or even car. On our family Alaska cruise, we created lifetime memories by sharing glacier spotting, dog sledding, flightseeing and other adventures with our teens. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices.
We offer you a variety of excursions to choose from, in every port you'll visit. While Icy Strait Point is only a port area, Hoonah is where the locals live, and I enjoyed observing local life in a remote town of only 850 people. While Radiance of the Seas may not have a zip line or ice-skating rink, it seemed like there were enough activities onboard to keep kids busy. Adventure Ocean kids programming, a basketball court, mini-golf, and rock climbing were available. There is also a children’s swimming area with a small slide, although this remained closed during our cruise due to the weather.
Furthermore, Cruise Critic makes no guarantees for availability of prices advertised on our site. Listed prices may have blackout dates, qualifications or restrictions.
The science center is just ten minutes from downtown by foot and has an admission cost of $12 for adults and $10 per child. The trailhead begins on the outskirts of downtown Juneau, a 25-minute walk from the cruise port area. If you don’t have anything planned for your day in Juneau, consider walking around downtown and relaxing on a bench or table on the boardwalk. One of my favorite things to do is grab a tasty treat—such as a block of fudge from the nearby Alaska Fudge Company—and enjoy dessert at one of the waterfront tables on the boardwalk.
I have the largest cruise vlogger channel currently on YouTube, with more than 3 million video views per month. If wildlife did not appeal, or they had time, there is also the Sitka National Historical Park, an easy walk from downtown. The park is 107 acres, but the collection of 15 totems put there in 1906 in the Totem Park is the most popular attraction. Head deeper into the frozen wilderness with one of our Alaska Cruisetours on board Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Spirit, combining your cruise with an immersive land vacation that goes beyond the expected. Spanning from 11- to 14-days, these cruise vacation packages include overnight stays in Denali, Anchorage, Fairbanks, Homer, Talkeetna, and Valdez.
Up the top are some trails, film about the history of the area, and local crafts gift shop. But they have ramped the cost up from around $30 to a hefty $50 return for a day pass. Another port on Heather’s travels will be Juneau, and I have some amazing low-cost things to do here, including what I think will be one of most memorable activities of the entire trip. In the end, I made some amazing memories with my friend Reeham and we were able to explore four unique Alaska cruise ports and discover more of Alaska’s culture, cuisine, and nature. However, I’ve already been to Alaska and will cruise to Alaska again in the future.
Trips to this area are seasonal — sailing from April through October. Since there is only a limited window of time to cruise, prices are considerably higher than similar Caribbean cruises you might be familiar with. The beautiful mountain city of Juneau was founded after gold discoveries in 1880 and is now one of the most popular cruise ports in Alaska. Because most tourist attractions are located within close proximity to each other, it’s easy to explore Sitka without an organized tour.
Here are 16 cheap and free things to do in Alaska’s four most popular cruise ports. Westerdam is also a slightly smaller ship than Eurodam, and as a result, its demographics on any given sailing are more likely to skew toward a retired crowd. To the extent that families with younger kids book Holland America ships, they are more likely to book one of its larger vessels.
